Tangled Web of Infections

The Crime

One of my arch germ enemies is the varicella zoster virus, nicknamed VZV. This germ criminal is very smart. Once inside a person’s body it never leaves. It is also able to cause two different diseases! It floats in the air and enters through the nose or mouth. But it is the skin it is really after. Its first attack on a person causes the disease known as chicken pox. VZV then hides out in the nerves around the spinal cord. When it decides to cause more trouble, it wakes up and crawls back to the skin. When VZV launches later attacks it causes a disease called shingles. VZV loves to travel so it is very contagious. One of the most confusing cases of my career involved a young family attacked by VZV.
